Inauguration of the Scholastic Year: Seminary of Our Lady, Saligao-Pilerne The  62nd scholastic year of the Seminary of Our Lady, Saligao-Pilerne was inaugurated on 15th June, 2014, the feast day of the Most Holy Trinity. At the a solemn High Mass, officiated by the Archbishop, Most Rev. Filipe Neri Ferrao and concelebrated by Rev. Fr. (Dr.) Walter D’Sa, Principal of St. Xavier’s College, Mapusa, and the staff of the Seminary, the Seminary Community prayed for God’s blessings on the year that had just begun. The Archdiocesan Pastoral theme has also been adopted as the theme  for the scholastic Year and keeping this in mind the Archbishop in his homily urged, particularly, the seminary community to deepen their faith and unity so that they could be agents of  a renewed society. The guests then gathered in the seminary auditorium for the inaugural function that consisted of a welcome march played by the seminary orchestra and two choral pieces sung by the Niwas Seminarians under the direction of Mr. Antonio Velho, the music teacher and the   Seminary Choristers, directed by Fr. Derrick Fernandes.  The Seminarians sang ‘Gonvlli Kitlo Boro’, put to music by late Fr. Tomas de Aquino Siqueira, an endearing personality, whose life was prematurely blown away ‘like a candle in the wind’ to borrow from the famous singer, Elton John. The traditional ‘Lectio Brevis’ was delivered in Konkani by Fr. Tony Salema, Rector, who keeping in mind the theme, dwelt on the third chapter of the  Apostolic Exhortation, Evangelii Gaudium, which stresses on our role as missionaries of the joyful news, the Gospel of Jesus,  by which God calls us to be agents of a renewed society. He  ended seeking the cooperation of  the parents of the students and the staff in imparting such a formation to the young wards. The Archbishop in his address also stressed on the witnessing role that every Christian has to play and hoped that the seminary staff and parents would work together to foster the faith of the students. He emphasised that all should encounter Christ, experience Christ and share Him with others. Earlier, Fr. Filipe Neri Dias, the Spiritual Director, welcomed the gathering. In his address Fr. Dias informed that the Seminarians of the Std. XII and X had brought excellent results at the Board exams held in March, 2014. While seven students were sponsored for Std. XII exams, of whom three passed with distinction and four in the first class, 26 students appeared for the  SSC Exams. Ten passed with distinctions, six in the first class and the rest in the second class with only one student failing in Maths but allowed to keep terms, thus obtaining a near 100% result. Among the successful candidates the top four are: Venancio Fernandes (HSSC, Arts 79%), Ryan Mascarenhas (HSSC, Science 78%), Ryvon Fernandes (SSC,90%) and Joynus Noronha (SSC, 88%).
